Implants Q & A

What is a dental implant?

Many adults find that having dental implants is almost like having natural teeth. When you lose your teeth as a result of a traumatic injury, decay, or an illness, it can hurt your self-esteem. Strong, durable, and aesthetically attractive, dental implants help restore the simple confidence that comes with having natural teeth.

A dental implant is a metal post that Dr. Quagliata implants into your jawbone beneath your gums. Essentially, it’s the root of your new tooth. The team at IQ Family & Cosmetic Dentistry relies on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) for specific placement of your implant and faster healing time.

CBCT is a specialized X-ray that allows Dr. Quagliata to create a 3D image of your mouth. The precision of this image allows Dr. Quagliata to help you decide which treatment plan is best for you. During the dental implant procedure, the CBCT image is used as guidance around nerves and soft tissue, increasing precision and predictability during the implant procedure.

What is PRF?

Dr. Quagliata suggests using PRF during the healing process. PRF allows the jaw to heal faster because it uses the body’s own blood to reduce healing time. PRF is prepared by drawing a small amount of your blood then spinning it in a centrifuge to separate out the platelets. The platelets are made into a mesh that’s placed directly on your healing area.

Once the post is in place and your mouth fully heals — a process that typically takes a few weeks — your dentist mounts the new replacement tooth (crown) on the post permanently. Because the implants fuse to your jawbone, they provide firm support for artificial teeth and don't shift around the mouth like some removable dentures.

These posts also help other dental work — like bridges and dentures — stay firmly fastened to your jaw.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Beyond functioning, feeling, and looking like your natural teeth, dental implants offer the following benefits:

  • Can last a lifetime with good care
  • Are a cost-effective way to replace missing teeth
  • Help maintain your natural smile and face shape
  • Protect your healthy jawbone
  • Help maintain the integrity of surrounding natural teeth
  • Help you talk casually and without worry
  • Don't fall out or move around in your mouth
  • Enhance your ability to chew your favorite foods without pain
  • Aren't wide open to cavities with an implanted crown
  • Offer a proven, predictable outcome for tooth repair

Can anyone get dental implants?

Whether you're missing one tooth or multiple teeth, you might be the perfect candidate for dental implants. Your jaw must be finished growing, and your gums must be healthy. Dental implants are an excellent solution for adults, not children.

You could also be a great implant candidate if you're tired of having dentures that won't stay in place, or if you're ready to replace a bridge or partial dentures. Patients who desire a more durable, long-term answer to dental work problems may be suitable candidates for implants.
