Everyone gets a sweet tooth now and then. You may suddenly get a craving for ice cream, or the candy bar in the office vending machine keeps calling your name. To maintain healthy teeth and a healthy mouth, you should limit your intake of sweets, but, what do you do with that craving? A good alternative to a sugary snack is a stick of sugarless gum. Not only will it tame that urge for something sweet, and freshen your breath, but it has other benefits as well.

For example, if you chew sugarless gum for 20 minutes after you eat, you are doing your mouth a huge favor. The act of chewing stimulates the production of saliva. While most people don’t want to discuss saliva, it is a very important part of a healthy mouth. Saliva helps to clean your teeth removing the acids and food debris that contribute to tooth decay. Your saliva also contains phosphates and calcium that your teeth need to remain strong. You should look for a sugarless gum that contains xylitol, which helps in cleaning and strengthening your teeth. With the added saliva, phosphates and calcium tooth sensitivity also decrease.

So, the good news is that sugarless gums will help you maintain a healthy smile. But it doesn’t replace your oral health routine. You need to brush at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, and floss once a day. You will need to see your dentist every six months for your routine cleaning and examination.
